I agree with John, it was a great class. It was interesting to see how different everyone's sites became. Katie had it right when she mentioned how much of ourselves we put into our pages. Bravo. It's been great to work with all of you, have a great summer! Try not to let those evil rays of sunlight make you too happy ; )

shadowbushido

Huzzah!

check out my page at http://www.shadowbushido.com

I consider this launch a success!

BUT...... I also consider this a Beta test and I have some more work to do. For instance, I need to put text into my pages that displays in the browser history. Also need to add a lot of labels to my pages for bots to pick up on and so I have some content to display on search engines.

Otherwise, cool.

Thanks everyone, you've been a great class!

Keep the blog alive!

This guy should have taken this class..

I stumbled upon this man's (Will Bryson) website recently and thought "Man is this unfortunate." He could have seriously used this web design class.
Upon carousing through his pages, you'll see the set-up is choppy, the color scheme doesn't seem to be working for it, though it really could be considerably worse. There seem to be broken links. His site is okay, but it is rather boring. Perhaps what is is that bothers me so much is that you could throw anyone's art in those boxes and call it their website just as easily. One thing I've sort of noticed in our class is that everyone here has been building a website that you can see personality put into. It's inheritly theirs. I think Will Bryson should put more of his own touch to his website.
To be fair, there are definitely positive points. His colors and setup are pretty consistent and his navigation is easy to follow (you can always get back to the first page, previous page, etc.).

Here is his website: http://www.willbryson.co.uk/

Sites

http://www.modernartistsgallery.com/

http://www.modernartist.com/ <-- really liked the flash done on the site

http://www.christianfillippo.com/home <-- liked the layout and the site was easy to navigate

Contemporary Spirituality in the Arts

Here's a look at some modern Islamic art, quite impressive.
I thoroughly enjoy the attention to geometric detail with the
incorporation of calligraphic text from the Qu'ran. We live in
a mixed media art world in this day and age.
This next site is a bit too busy when considering the color
scheme, but the work is nice. I particularly enjoy the video
stills that are included--it reminds me of the stillness of
meditation in a chaotic world.

Compairing good sites from bad sites

Check this out, how to compare the good quality's from the bad quality's of web sites

Check this out!

Have you ever wanted to compare your art work to others and get voted on. This is a good way to get your name online and a chance to bring people to your sites.

http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/showdown/login.php

Concerning www3.

strange.... the address for Hisashi's sama's site doesn't link. I triple-checked his domain name and entered it correctly, wonder what's up? if u can spell it, type his name into browser to see his work. Sorry 'bout the deadlink, better luck next time.

lol, click on his address to get the message
"Bad request"

everyone's a critic, even tha' W3....

Tenmyouya Hisashi

Another of my influences across the Big Drink, Tenmyouya Hisashi is a cool illustrationist melding traditional Japanese art with modernist/Westernist art-forms.
Check out his easily navigable page at the confusing address

Concerning his address, why is it www3. and why does it have a capital E?

Is it some W3 oceanic-specific address? what gives? cool...

Oh yeah, Japanese Kanji characters are exceptionally tricky to express with graffiti so check out his door panel graph with awe; the iris flowers are a tip o' the hat to Hiroshige, Yay!

End Torture of P.O.W.'s

http://www.commissiononaccountability.org

sign this petition to end the torture of enemy combatants and uphold the tenants of the Geneva Convention instated after WW2 to prevent human rights abuses. U.S troops were water-boarded by the Japanese during WW2. We beheaded the torturers. End the cycle of horror by speaking your voice. The internet is a soapbox, stand up and say your peace, for peace. Speak out in the hope that Obama will hold the previous administration accountable for their crimes against humanity. Send Bush, Cheney and Gonzalas to Gitmo.
http://www.earthlyadornments.com for nice site with fossil background. http://www.expo-klimt.com for a klimt museum. Several sites I look at for middle eastern jewelry have closed, whether because of war, government, unable to get items who knows. I like reading everyone else's suggestions. I haven't been impressed with much lately. Looks like a lot of sites are just templates.

Anti-CIA

Justin,

Don't forget the anti-CIA comprised of all the bright young minds graduating from foreign colleges in the middle-east, south-east Asia, and Latin America.

We have infiltrated every nation in the world with foreign nationals working in government bureaus and moonlighting as CIA operatives. Yay Us!

Here's a list of CIA lapdogs circa 1983 compliments of namebase.org, a non-profit dedicated to transparency here and abroad. http://www.namebase.org/sources/FQ.html

See you in Gitmo!

My Hero

One of my great, great influences, Yoshitaka Amano has shown across the world, Tokyo, NYC, Paris, his painting style is Ukiyo-e-meets Japonisme-meets 18th century book illustration-meets post-modern Japanese art; a full-circle synthesis.

Feed the starving multitudes (while getting really, really smart)

http://www.freerice.com

wanna kill time while saving lives?

Freerice is an incredible site that offers quiz in vocabulary, art history, math, geography, chemistry, and languages. For every right answer you get the site donates 10 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program (they use their advertising revenue to buy rice).
Bookmark this site and get smart.
Eventually you'll know that pombe is an east African beer, that Goya painted Saturn Eating His Son, that die flut is German for flood, that 12 x 9 = 108, that Belgrade is the capital of Serbia, that Pu is the symbol for Plutonium, and that the car MOVES fast......

oh yeah, and hemidemisemiquaver is a orchestral 64th note....

you will be smart and feed the world....

Beat my 7560 grains of rice I donated the other night when we got back from Boston....

Drink the tea, but don't let the bag enter the mouth

Ahahaha. Nothing special going on here, a bunch of blogs posted by overly steeped conservatives. For the most part many of these people seem to be uneducated concerning American history (especially with all their ranting and raving about 'tyranny!')...hmmm, how was the West won? For any additional laughs and/or uncomfortable head shakes take a look at Fox News...apparently President Obama is overstepping his boundaries in more than one area.
Free episodes of the Daily Show have some gut busting laughs on the matter too.

"Don't touch my pictures!"

I was browsing the web looking for a photographer that had taken pictures of musicals and other events at my high school when I stumbled upon this website, with pictures from my school's production of Beauty and the Beast. On the photos there are watermarks which, as most people know, are used to prevent people from stealing your work and claiming it as their own.

These... are alright, but really I think it detracts from how the work looks online. It's been mentioned various times also (including in class), that watermarks are kind of pointless because the quality of the work on the internet isn't as good as the original's quality anyhow. So are these watermarks worthless? I think they are. These pictures would look even more buyable without "proof" covering them up.

Artists sites

First site: Toronto illustrator Miki Sato has some awesome collage-style illustrations with fabric and textiles. I liked the simple buttons she used and its very easy to navigate her site. Flickr.

http://www.mikisatoillustration.com/

Vancouver illustrator Edward Kwong has some truly lovely work in his portfolio,it was a little weird not having buttons but i liked the layout with the small thumbnails.

http://www.edkwong.com/

Finding two sites that i liked i decided to find the worst site ever and this so far is at the top of my list. When someone sees this site, their reaction is the same as my reaction when I first saw it — What the Heck? its just so crazy.

http://www.havenworks.com/

Good use of hidden menus for large amounts of info.

I like the picture that you see first. then you look around at the subjects that are very easy to read. I would put a arrow to show that there is a drop down menu but besides that I think this site is inviting.

Black Market Index

Interesting page, havocscope is the black market equivalent of the Dow Jones Industrial Index, and tracks the economic value of illicit goods and services like human trafficking, prostitution, street drugs, technologies and entertainment piracy, and weapons sales.... pretty fascinating to look through, especially when you consider that worldwide black markets represent nearly a trillion dollars in annual profits... what a world, what a world.

Brave Elena

The mention of Chernobyl made me remember http://www.kiddofspeed.com , Elena rides through the area on a motorcycle and takes photographs. Not the most artsy, designed site , but idea and images are great. The more I look the less impressed I am with sites and site searching. I've got to much to do just to get my own stuff looking tolerable. Sounds selfish, but it's just post 50 commentary.

yes....

mind blowing spray paint stencil art....

My roomate rory introduced me to this freshman year, and showed me how to do this. The artwork is just as much fun making, as it is seeing it pop out once you spray it. If you even look for it stencil art is even all around on buildings in Chernobyl.

Every armed conflict in the world involving post-soviet automatic weapons is the direct result of Colt, the manufacturers of the standard
tool to kill, from Palestine to Pakistan, Mexico, Somalia, Iraq....
Made in the Heartland of America, in Hartford CT. Lets shut these mo'fos down! Read Colt's mission statement and check out their nice web page  ^^

Funny how the source of the tools causing  all the death, genocide, and terrorism in the world are produced in "HARTford CT, in the HEARTland of America...... AS A BUSINESS! So all this terror shiet is part of Colt's business model.... all this global war and genocide is part of colt and Lockheed/Martin, and the rest of the military industrial complex' business model....

Those M4 5.56 cal carbine-powered automatic rifles used in 90 armed countries in the world to kill and oppress and terrorize come from the HEART! From the heartland of America.....
Lets shut down Colt and all the other weapons manufacturers so that we have to go back to killing each other with swords...

Hmm..

I found this site and the loading time for the flash involved was kind of annoying. I also didn't like how the intro. page didn't have a skip button. For users who've been frequenting the site it must be bothersome to have to sit through the same intro. each time they arrive at the site.

lol

I left a comment on Bethany's post that turned into a three page paper... more of  a rant rather, does anyone agree with anything I say or am I a blathering blatherskyte?

Culture Jamming brings new functionality to old ideas, like a cultural I.E.D.
BOOM! Visual imagery explodes through the internal world of the viewer, causing massive acculturation or slices through an individual's perceptual filters like a surgeon's knife, to insert new ideas, new values. Either way, art is a weapon!

Nagi Noda

Nagi Noda is a versatile artist specializing in sculpture, fabrication, design, and illustration.
My wife turned me on [to this site] and I'm crazy [about the content].

^^
I love her work but H8 her site.
All her content loads onto pages that have no navigable aspects and if you close the window you land back on her home-page, pages away from the content you were viewing ><.
The secret is that if you click on the page's content, it acts as a back button to the content menu, sneaky but not intuitive. It works though once you get the hang of it and learn to read the baroque fonts she used...
:P

Check out her hair hats if you can read her fonts and navigate through her page (a daunting task) and remember, don't design a page like this because there are too many design quirks that disrupt the navigation flow. ^^

How To Win › with Steve Duncombe and Steve Lambert

"This is a work in progress created by Steve Lambert, artist provocateur and Stephen Duncombe, theorist provocateur. We both consider ourselves engaged citizens and both think that using art and culture to transform the world is a good idea. But we are both haunted by the same question: How do we gauge the success of our projects? Hell, how do we even think about success when our goal is utopia? This site is a place to explore this and related questions."

http://howtowin.visitsteve.com/

Numerous interviews with artists and activists; some great ideas to think about here. I personally love the concept of the artist-as-citizen, and the role of/goals of artists as bringing about positive social change. Take a look—it's a neat project with intelligent conversations. Very inspiring.

Basement Medicine

APRIL 15 This is your deadline to submit j-pegs of your artwork to Basement Medicine.

This is a great way to get your work seen by a wide audience, as the paper is distributed around Johnson as well as some surrounding towns. I would highly recommend giving this a shot—inspire your peers, beautify our school paper, make the world a better place!

The final issue is dedicated to art and they may even add additional pages, in color!

Include a caption with artist info/title of piece, and make sure jpegs are large enough for decent reproduction. Send to:

Nice L.A. art gallery page.

I like the color scheme, the invisibility of the site, and the navigation. The reason I went here was following the work of Chiho Aoshima, who creates whole environments by installing vinyl prints of her digital illustrations right on the gallery wall.

blogger comments

I've been leaving responses to people's posts.

Look in the comments section to read them.

I'm surprised there isn't more of a dialogue going on in the comments section responding to people's posts.

I've been learning to apply my art criticism skills to web page criticism and have been learning to look at web pages in terms of art analysis: composition, color theory, content.

web_value

Found a site that appraises the value of any web page published on the net by evaluating a number of criteria including the site's history, popularity, friendliness, interest, recognition, and depth potential. The site gives the current and potential value of the site. I'm not sure how valid the estimator is. Are the variables universally acknowledged by the W3 Consortium? Anyway, play around with it. I looked up a couple of artist's pages and they were valued at $12,645. and $16,500.

Kommunikation

Found this site accidentally, a pleasant surprise. Not much to it at all, but the design is simple and effective.

VIK MUNIZ

Don't play with your food kids unless you're making Art. Vik Muniz is a very unique artist who creates imagery with traditional and not so tradition methods. His website keeps his audience up to date with his recent works at the home page. He has a sophisticated roll overs within the dot painting that introduce different contents of his website. I also like the scroll effect that happens when you scroll fast. This is an awesome website! Check out the video titled "Worst Possible Illusion", its a video about Vik explain how he makes his art and why he makes it. Click the gallery, scroll down to 2001, then click on "pictures of clouds", AND THEN click "Worst Possible Illusion". Great video!

check out this site of brooklyn artist kevin cyr. he does these amazing photo realism paintings of old service vans and vehicles covered in graffiti. very effective and awesome as well.

Antony Gormerly

Antony Gormerly is one of my favorite sculptors. He has a great homepage that is simple and easy to navigate. You can reach the home page from any page in the website. What I really like about this scupltor is that he photographer almost all of his works are on this website since the beginning of his carreer. CHECK OUT THIS WEBSITE!

User-Friendliness

A friend of mine told me to visit Twitter's site today, so I did, and it was pleasant how user-friendly it seems to both frequent users as well as new visitors to the site. It explains what the site is for, why, and how, right off the bat. The flash is unique and simple, the design is uncluttered and inviting. I thought it was a nice format for a popular site, considering other sites that try to connect people and increase communication with excessive ads and various links, all on the main page. This is very refreshing:

http://twitter.com/

boring website, lots of text to read about art biz

http://www.artbusiness.com/artists.html

my new favorite artist

Vania Zouravliov is my new favorite artist check out his work at the cool art collective page                                             www.bigactive.com
To get to his art, click on the left menu under illustrators. He's on the bottom. Amazing illustration, reminds me of early 20th century british book illustrator Harry Clarke. Check him out.

pantone

                           http://www.pantone.com

I spent some time on the Pantone web page and noted some interesting features. First of all is the palette. Pantone is a color company and their web page has an off-white body with grey font. Pantone has chosen to emphasize their color products by de-emphasizing the palette of the web page. If they loaded up their page design with color, it would overshadow the color products Pantone offers. I thought this was cool. Another interesting element are the drop down menus. I think drop downs are overwhelming when they offer more than 3 or 4 categories. Otherwise, I love the rollover sound effects that accompany the lower buttons. It's a fun, playful element that makes me remember the site.

Finally, good sites!

http://www.noupe.com for web advice;css etc. and http://www.jalbum.net for pre-made albums. Check out Venice in black and white by Honeybee, the thumbnails are great.

amazing amazing animation. This kind of technology will be responsible for the revelatory art of the near future that will rival the innovation and spiritual awakening of the Renaissance if only the art could tear itself from the capitalist engine that fuels it.

Beautiful work

^^

guerrilla

anyone like their news wetworks style?

This page is interesting. I like the way the designers branded the site to make it feel like a para-military brief.
Design wise, the page is laid out like  a newspaper format because, well, it's a news page...

There is some interesting stuff on this site that doesn't make the front pages of the media oligarchy. Kinda reads like the anti-economist...

This page is like Fox news for non-state actors ^^

>:P

...goodbye

Cool thought,

Do you think the internet has become institutionalized? What i mean is, have the transnational dot coms like amazon, e-bay, and google, as well as state and federal government and ngos defined the collective perception of what the internet is by their presence on-line? does the internet 'look' a certain way to you? Well, I ask because i've found, going through my bookmark folders, that many, many graphic and web designer's web pages are either not found or are in stasis. This is cool. Artist web pages are the ultimate ephemera, because they don't exist physically, and they are only meant to be viewed for a short time.... you can't throw a web page away, and the page can exist until the web crashes, and even then it could be stored on any device. Here is an example of what one design firm did to 'close' their page.

This is cool because the artdorks still own their space but have closed their site. They still have a web presence, only their page is a farewell to those who frequented it. But they're still on-line. It would be cool to have an online business card that was a 0-button, -navigation page that acted as your title-card or placeholder on the internet.
this could be updated so easily....
interesting design idea, a digital placeholder on the global stage

^^
Check out Doze Greens site.

I think the animated navigation system gets in the way of the content, but Green's site is very flashy.

Kerry Skarbakka

Kerry Skarbakka is one of my favorite photographers and I hate his website due to poor navigation... I really like the series titled "The struggle to right oneself". You have to read the artist statement for this series to appreciate this series. His photography truely makes you wonder "how the hell does photograph himself falling?" Crazy and amazing photographer...but his website sucks because you have to use the back button too much!

Vagrant Art

Banksy has become quite popular in the graffiti world. All of his books are worth checking out, and of course his website is worth a look through as well. The site is basic, but contains all the images you need to get a feel for his sociopolitical works. At first it seems like he does not have a lot of image content, but look at the base of the site and use the scroll bar to make your way through the images.

Ten Ways For An Artist to Promote Their Website

I found this website and thought it might provide some good tips for promoting our websites.
http://artistportfoliowebsites.com/websitedesign/

I found this site when i was doing my paper of the article assigned for class. Kevin Cornell is the guy who wrote the article i chose. He is a illustrator/ designer and he spends a lot of his time updating his website. I enjoyed his "work" page. I liked how he had his gallery set up. He had small thumbnails that showed each piece of work he had. But once you clicked on it, you saw that that image was something completely different then you ma have thought. I enjoyed trying to guess what each one would be.

Navigation

Elektra recommended http://www.maccosemetics.com for lots of info and activity that is easily accessible. Flashy black background, columnar information, artist videos, easy purchasing. Grey font perhaps hard to see. I started checking out local businesses, both using horizontal nav bars: http://www.clairesvt.com and http://www.perennialpleasures.net . The latter is text heavy and could use more imagery since the place is beautiful. Nothing gut wrenchingly great, but fairly easy access.

Many a links from jim

I stumbled across these for my site and they have been extremely useful on building my site. Im sure many of you can uses these sites for whatever you seem fit. I found the images an extra boost to my online repertoire.

thumbnails and book pages

Yes, I forgot to post. When items are posted late on Monday I don't get a chance to see them before class, very frustrating. http://www.tenneson.com and http://wwwseankernan.com for lots of thumbnails. Joyce's site seems redundant or not quite smooth, mainly because there is so much work. The Secret Books of Sean Kernan are great. Although his site has all sorts of options: classic, flash, mega-flash.

http://www.nagaoka-id.ac.jp/gallery/gallery.html

I like the navigation of this site. You just scroll the mouse and the wheels turn and click the x to view bigger image. Simple, clean. I didn't care too much for the sound effects, however or the contents of the images.
http://www.house-of-dracula.com/

I was exploring different websites and came across this one. I think the homepage is cool, it definitely drew my attention. I like the effects when navigating over the links. The navigation is really simple.

Blue Moose Studio

I was browsing different sites, and came across this artist's web page: http://bluemoosestudio.us/index.html

Her watercolor art is beautiful, and I really like her simplistic site layout. It's very easy to navigate through, and the black background really lets the color contrasts in her work pop out.

I chose this website more for the content. I really enjoyed the birght photographs. It was also a nice simple website. Everything seems to happen on the same page, and navigation is easy.

usable_information_technology

hi gang!

here is an interesting resource on web page usability that addresses fundamental web page design do's and don'ts by web designer jakob nielsen:

there are also some good articles jakob authored on home_page redesign priorities, home-page usability, and past web design mistakes.

jakob's page is a no-nonsense 2_color blog_style long page. nielsen's type layout is structured in the F_shaped pattern for reading on the web that optimizes the eye_tracking visualization ability of web_users.

                                   http://useit.com/alertbox/reading_pattern.html

this is interesting gang, basically a study has been done that records eye_tracking in web_users and reveals that people track in an "F_shape".

nielson's site useit.com has a crisp no-frills design that considers, communicates, and utilizes good design sense for optimum usability.

read his site and consider how the F_shaped type layout pattern makes reading the page any easier or exerts less strain on the eyes.

re:DESIGN of the 21st Century

re:DESIGN of the 21st Century...."yeah right?" coming to mind? Maybe. That will entirely depend on our actions (or lack there of). These sites are simple in structure, easy to navigate, and highly informative...

www.thezeitgeistmovement.com

www.thevenusproject.com

p.s. If you are unfamiliar with the Zeitgeist movies you can watch them for free right here

www.zeitgeistmovie.com

I only ask that the length of these movies not be the reason you don't watch them.

Site's

I have been a little bit slow in getting these up haha... but here are my 2 sites and the one for today.

1. Interesting site i found on architect. On this Web site, you can design a house, walk through it in 3D, and then share it with the world. You can also learn more about architecture, past and present, and explore Frank Lloyd Wright's life and work. The site was pretty easy to navigate and i liked the lay out of it.
http://www.architectstudio3d.org/AS3d/home.html

2. I really like that the site makes use of cutting-edge animation plug-ins. This site is colorful, fun, very interactive, (more for the kid audience) but it still gave me some great ideas.
http://www.haringkids.com/

And my third site. I thought this site was the most interesting and creative. This website will invite you to click only once as it then takes you in to a clickless world where interfaces are reached in a variety of different and experimental ways. With a history lesson to boot (we have only had the click since the mouse and that isn't long!) this site will make you wonder about what the future really holds for the ways in which we access and use the internet.

Sites

Here are some websites that I think have a very goo layout and overall composition. http://www.greatbiggraphics.net/ http://failedskateboards.com/index.html

long pages^^

I've been appreciating the "looooong" page lately. If the Book's "double-spread" has defined modern graphic design habitually since the advent of the printing press, then the long page is becoming the digital double-spread format for the "post-paper" digital age. The long page is the blog format, the most volatile and immediate form of communication next to email. I love how intuitive it is to scan those long pages, slipping past embedded images and hyperlinks to www.youtube.com, www.veoh.com, artists pages, whole cultural movements I never knew existed. I've found that visually surfing blogs has become the predominant way I interface with the internet. I have a few blog-style long pages that I check regularly including www.woostercollective.com, a great culture jamming jump-off point, www.rojo-magazine.com, an interesting Japanese magazine and design-heavy site, and although it's not a long page, ya gotta check out www.etsy.com. The long page is interesting and I want to play around with that format this semester. Anyone have a favorite blog site or looooong page they wanna share?

Freeman Stevens

Freeman is a friend of mine from high school. He is an amazing photographer with a very slick website. I really like his navigation controls; simple yet sophisticated. You can hide or reveal the navigation dialog box by clicking any where on the website. This is a nice feature to decrease distractions from his photography. I like the background color for this website. I'm not really a fan of animations that interact with movement of the cursor but I like how on Freeman's website how it fades away when the cursor stops moving.

more photo sites

Check out http://www.arnorafaelminkkinen.org for nice thumbnails. Also, http://photography-now.net for posh photo portfolios. They have joined up with Gallery Book to make sites for artists. http://gallerybook.info/index.php Brian and I saw downloadable sample pages, but I can't find them again!

http://jenniferlynnmorse.com/
My friend recommended this site to me. The home page is simple and easy to navigate around. "Into Powder and Dust" is my favorite series. I also really liked how she had her gallery set up. I liked how when i scrolled to the end of the group of pictures by clicking on the pictures, a new GROUP of pictures would automatically slide in without me having to click on the next button. She also had a nice color theme.

Since I didn't post last week, I also liked http://www.beingcaribou.com
It's set up like a newsletter but I like the home page. It's interesting.

I like Kurt's work and website. It's simple, easy to navigate, comfortable.

I have so many diffrent ideas for my site and im really not too finalized about all the details, but i know id like to include a css dropdown menu, which will take some work. I also like the simple design, but i wish find a way to spruce it up a little

brian's mockup- homepage

this is the idea i have for my mainpage on my website. easy to navigate, not much to it. simple, possibly with some hints of refinement.

$100 million

Interesting piece by celebrity artist Damien Hirst comprised of 8,700 diamonds.  Sold for 100 million dollars.... ?

Mutated Veggies Web Page

I like the design of this page displaying hundreds of fotos of mutated vegetables. Looks like the designer used a lot of javascript, for example to do the scrolling navigation. I love how simple the design is though. Beautiful fotos too. Check it out.

^^

Denis Peterson Hyper realist painter

Check out these acrylic paintings, obscenely realistic...........
Peterson addresses global poverty through painting. Check out his techniques.
This hyper-realistic style underscores the dichotomy of actual and perceived realities. Caravaggio eat your heart out....

Oh yeah, nice little web page design as well, no frills, easy to navigate and stylistically unified. The white background lets Peterson's work stand out without distraction.

Ioan Sabau

A long way to go...

Rosa's mock up

Here is my mock up. My first image is the entry page upon clicking on the enter you will then be navigated to main page (image 2). Then the third image is how I want my layout (so far). I want navigation through my site to be easy. I added a panel at the top to show off my work. For the layout I wanted simple which I'm still working on so this is all I have thus far.

Shadow_bushido.com

My web page concept revolves around zero navigation meaning that when the viewer gets to my page all navigation occurs on one screen. Basically, once you land on my page you can navigate through the images with arrow keys located at the bottom of the page. Each image that is loaded will have accompanying title, medium and other written data relevant to the image. I want my page to be a simple, straightforward, and attractive portfolio of my work that will augment my resume. One web-design aspect that bothers me is having many windows or pages load me away from the main page. I like pages that I can navigate through without having to get lost in the page.

Attempt #1

I always feel like the last horse out of the gate. Iwas just overwhelmed, but the collage sites inspired me. I need to add the word photography. I have some free fonts from the web, but don't know how to access them. I'm getting excited about this, wanting my site to be effective, but very individual.

Katie's Mock-up

So, this is my Photoshop Mock-up. I'm still experimenting with colors and layout, and I really like this one (the layout) because it's pretty simple, and doesn't have a whole lot of potential for confusing people or muddling things up. I know that I will probably be making more sections, such as subdivisions for the artwork itself (like digital, photography, so on..) and was thinking maybe a drop-down menu would be a highly organized way to do that. I still have a lot of experimenting to do before I feel I will be satisfied with the look and operation of my site.

Jerry Uelsmann

I have always been a huge fan of Jerry Uelsmann photography. I really like this website because it has easy navigation with a simple yet professional design.

Three pages from Ken

I've posted three images. The first is the Entry Page, which will open at the start--the word "Enter" appearing only as a roll-over. Clicking will open the Main Page, with Ken Leslie Header and three options--Professional, Professorial and Personal. Again, those words will only appear as roll-overs.
The third page is the Home Page for Ruby's weaving website.

Brian's photoshop mock up

This my idea thus far...it has a long way to go. I want my web site to be simple, easy to navigate, and have an professional appearance. For the portfolio button I want to have a scroll down roll over feature, so that the viewer can navigate to different genres of my photography without clicking the back button.

the grass is green on this side too

Window for displaying artwork_NOAH

This is what I'm thinking for a way to display my of my panel pieces that I have photographed. I plan to create a slide show window that you can zoom into individual panels by running the cursor over it, or selecting it to view the texture. Kinda like how new mac computers zoom into the icons when selecting a program... How would you display panel artwork?

Click here to check out how I them displayed now

Well, I just found http://www.collageart.org/links/ with a ton of artists and a great variety of web sites. Sally Jean is great, the style remains constant throughout the site with her own personal flavor. Clifford Alejandro is very clean, perhaps too many pages with dots to get somewhere. Lots to see.

Class Cancelled and Other Info

Hey all—

We will not be meeting tonight for class; I would suggest getting as far as you can with the bare-bones laying out and positioning of your home pages. On Monday, we will be moving on to buttons, images, and linking, so BE prepared to start adding these elements.
This afternoon I will be adding a readings menu to the right-hand side of the blog, make sure you do the required reading by Monday.
Also, for homework, by Monday, BEFORE class, upload a j-peg image of your Photoshop mock-up to the blog. I realize some of you have used layers to simulate navigating between pages; in this case, choose one image that gives us a good idea of your site layout. Also include a written description of your planned website. Email me if you have problems or questions.

See you Monday; have a great snowy weekend!

Web design tips

http://www.smartwebby.com/web_site_design/webdesign_tips.asp

Some tips

mindblowing digital art

I stumbled on this site a while back, and that style just struck me as quite amazing. Its pretty neat to be able to find someone with this sense of abilty and percetion to create something like this.

http://www.neosurrealismart.com/

Aya Kato

One of my favorite digital artists, Aya Kato is a Japanese commercial illustrator working with the Adobe Suite.

To criticize her page a bit, it requires using slider bars to view the entire page, a design factor that takes away from the grandeur of her work.

I love her work though, it's like  a mixture of Egon Schiele, and Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, check her work out at paintalicious.org, a cool art community page.

Enjoy

Beautiful/Decay

Beautiful/Decay is an art publication that follows contemporary art movements, specifically postmodern art and design. The B/D blog is a great jumping-off point for surveying new new art and art movements so check it out.

Check out the "Tale of How" short animated film, it's too much!

web_design_how-to

I stumbled upon this helpful resource while trying to figure out how to approach designing my web page http://webstyleguide.com/page/index.html. There is a ton of info on this site for doing web page layout. Check it out!

Absolute Positioning Inside Relative Positioning!

This article from CSS tricks makes it easy to understand how absolute positioning inside relative positioning works.

CSS Positioning

Check out this website; pretty easy to understand with great examples. Read by Wednesday and check back whenever you need some review...

www.noriomatsumoto.com

www.noriomatsumoto.com

I like nature photography and this site was easy to navigate. I thought it was cool being given the option to look at it full screen or standard. I enjoyed the general setup. It's a simple slideshow and I liked the darker background.

You say (pə-tā'tō).....I'll say [pUH-tey-tuh]

These sites are interesting...
Eric Chan uses has harnessed some fun interactions with his viewers (especially if you own a MacBook), and despite all of this site's complexities it is still straight-forward and easy to use.
http://www.ericchandesign.com/

However, I think the Lucuma site is more aesthetically interesting and has a better user-friendly layout. Don't be daunted by the language English speakers!! This is some basic stuff...
http://lucuma.com.ar/

p.s. I found the second site here:
http://dzineblog.com/2008/09/getting-creative-with-javascript.html

Greenfield

I chose this site because Lois Green field is one of my favorite photographers. My favorite photography that she does is known as airborne. I love that her subjects can defy gravity. I also found her website easy to navigate around. One aspect of her site that I liked was that after choosing one of her types of styles off the home site, the list dropped to the left of the screen so it was easily accessible. http://www.loisgreenfield.com/index.html
